Registration Open for Manhattan Beach Yuletide 5K

Nov 04, 2014 10:00PM ● By Jeanne Fratello
Registration is now open for one of Manhattan Beach's most popular and unique beach running races, the Manhattan Beach Yuletide 5K, to be held on Saturday, December 6. Runners can race, walk, or push a jogger down on the flat sand, lit by the full moon and glowsticks and luminarias.

The race starts and finishes under the Christmas lights of the Manhattan Beach Pier, with runners heading north to the jetty at 45th Street and back. The miles are marked with splits and "kick" markers from 400m to go guarantee a speedy finish. According to race organizers, the super-low tide creates a perfect running surface of hard packed sand like a dirt road, so running with or without shoes is an option (the faster athletes tend to wear shoes) or even track spikes. Baby joggers are also welcome and encouraged.

The 5K Run/Walk (open to all ages) starts at 5:30 p.m.; the Elves Dash 1K (ages 7 to 12) will be held at 6:30 p.m.; the Little Elves 400m race (ages 3 to 6) will be held at 6:40 p.m.; and the Crawlers 50m race (age 2 and under) will be at 6:50 p.m.

Glow necklaces and t-shirts are guaranteed to all registered runners, and are available while supplies last to late registrants. Top-placing runners win unique (and delicious) rewards, and runners in 28 categories will have a chance to stand at the podium.

The race costs $40 for the 5K and $25 for the kids' races. Registration can be done online at www.mb5K.com. Packet pickup and late registration can be done at on Friday, December 5th, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Village Runner in Manhattan Beach, and from 3:00 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. at the Manhattan Beach Pier on race day.

The race is sponsored by Manhattan Beach Confidential.
