Legendary 'Grudge' Match Produces A Winner

Nov 04, 2014 01:10PM ● By Mb News Staff
In what's become a yearly "grudge" match between the Manhattan Beach Fire Department, Police Department, Parks & Recreation Commission and "The Cheater," a souped up Pumpkin Police Car raced to the finish line ahead of fierce competition during the 24th Annual World Famous Pumpkin Race Festival on Sunday, October 26. The races took place after the SKECHERS Pier to Pier Friendship Walk.

Last year's victor, current Mayor Wayne Powell, was dismayed by the results, saying his pumpkin never had a chance after a mystery woman appeared at the starting line launching a pumpkin racer that took his out.

Longtime MBPD officer Lt. Andy Harrod crafted the department's winning racer. "The build was a fun and challenging experience and a real team effort on behalf of the Police Department," he said. "A lot of time and attention went in to the construction of the pumpkin to make sure it functioned properly when it came time for the big race. We were honored to win the race and be a part of the event again this year. We can’t wait to do it again next year!"

The Parks & Rec Commission's pumpkin racer took second place, turning over some three feet before the finish line but getting closer than any other pumpkin in the race. "The Cheater," a watermelon, was detected and destroyed--all in good fun, of course!
