Scare and Tear Surf Contest for Day of the Dead

Oct 30, 2014 10:18AM ● By Jeanne Fratello
After a long Halloween night, what better way to celebrate the Day of the Dead than at the Scare and Tear Surf Contest? On Saturday morning, November 1, local surfers will compete in costume at a lively surf event at the Manhattan Beach Pier, sponsored by Spyder Surf and Shaggo Skateboards.

The contest will run from 7:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Surfers will be judged in the following categories: Micro Zombs (5th grade and under); Zombs (6th-8th grade); and Creatures (high school on up). Longboard, shortboard, sponge, and SUP riders will be divvied up based on entries. Contestants will be judged 50 percent on costume, 50 percent on surfing. T-shirts will be given to pre-registered entrants and to late entrants while supplies last.

Will there be prizes? Of course! "Horrible awards" will be given to the top 3 in each division, plus "any other monster we feel like feeding."

Registration is $30. Register online at www.scareandtear.com or in person at Spyder Surf, 2461 Pacific Coast Highway in Hermosa Beach.
