Beach volleyball lovers turned out Wednesday to watch top local volleyball players mix it up on the sand south of the Manhattan Beach Pier during Day One of the two-day Charlie Saikley 6-Man Beach Volleyball Tournament.

“The volleyball has returned to being the main draw,” said event organizer J. Parker Saikley, son of founder Charlie Saikley, for whom the tourney was named upon his passing.

"I love this tournament and it's something I look forward to every year,” said Austin Zahn, who plays middle blocker on the Simmzys/Beckers team, which is defending its title this year.

The tournament, which has 43 teams this year, is a celebration of the sport of volleyball, complete with costumes and props, and the chance to compete against or hang out with the likes of Casey Jennings, Luke Walton, Matt Leinart and other sports notables.

On Wednesday, many familiar faces were among the teams that regularly play every year, including Team Fletch, Simmyz's, Good Stuff, Team Rockstar, and The Wrestlers.

“I have been coming for years and I love it,” said Manhattan Beach resident Tom Meiners. “What I love more about it now is actually to get up close and see the great players and personalities, instead of fighting through a sea of people.”

The tournament ends today. Admission is free.
